Deborah followed her advice. She took a moment to brush out her hair and wash her face before following. Lizbet had been very successful garnering offers from young, eligible men before she’d settled on Edmond. If anyone could help, she could.

However, before going to the morning room, she sought out her brother-in-law. She caught him as he was leaving the sitting room and confronted him.

“You went through my personal things.”

Edmond had the good grace to blush, but he did not apologize. “This is my house.”

“You wanted my money.”

He looked down the hall as if wishing Lizbet would interrupt them. When she didn’t make an appearance, he said briskly, “We are family. I did not think you would mind.”

“Oh, I mind, Edmond. I mind very much.”

“But it is all going to work out for the better, isn’t it? I talked to Lizbet. One way or the other, everything will work to your advantage,” he answered smugly. “In fact, you should be thanking me instead of pressing the issue. Who knows what riches your future holds?”

Deborah shook her head. “Be careful, Edmond. I may not play the game the way you wish.” With that word of warning, she turned on her heel and left him.

Tony spent a restless night. He’d always gotten what he wanted. Either through hard work, money, or persuasion, he’d always succeeded. No one had ever refused him.

Save Deb.

Nor could he accept the idea that she was not as captivated of him as he was of her. It was simply not possible… and yet, she’d rejected him.

He came to the breakfast table heavy-lidded and tired. Food held no appeal, and he had no enthusiasm for the day ahead.

While he sipped a cup of strongly brewed coffee, Allendale knocked on the breakfast room door. Tony invited him in and offered him coffee.

“Warner came by early this morning, my lord,” Allendale said. “I told him I didn’t really have time to deal with him until Monday, but he was insistent about going to work immediately. I sent him to the merchant office for the day to help with ship schedules.” He paused and then admitted, “Perhaps I was too harsh in my assessment of him. He seems a bright and capable man and is very willing to make a mark for himself.”

“Yes, that was my thought, too,” Tony agreed. And, in turn, he would also receive word from time to time about Deb.

“He brought this in, my lord, and asked me to deliver it to you personally.”
